Tropical Courtyard House

Home Addition

Florida

The Tropical Courtyard House transforms a once nondescript rambler into a lush, tropical retreat inspired by the principles of tropical modernism. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Vladimir Ossipoff and Geoffrey Bawa, this home embraces passive design strategies that invite light, shade, and natural breezes. The addition at the rear of the property is intentionally separated from the main residence, offering the owners a private retreat while allowing friends and family to enjoy the primary home. This separation not only creates a sanctuary-like courtyard at the center but also provides cooler, shaded areas that enhance the comfort of the outdoor space.

Timber shading elements, including louvers and pergolas, provide elegant shade while echoing the beauty of the local environment. The home’s flooring, a resilient shellstone made from local coral and sediment, extends seamlessly from interior to exterior. A hybrid timber and steel outdoor living structure with retractable screens allows for year-round dining and relaxation by the swimming pool, offering a perfect blend of comfort and connection to nature.

In essence, the Tropical Courtyard House is a celebration of Florida’s climate and landscape, creating a home that is both a private retreat and an open embrace of tropical modernist principles.
